Clarification of the reporting on the donation of Matthias Brückmann and EWE AG to the KLITSCHKO Foundation

Hamburg, February 24, 2017. Regarding the reporting in recent days and weeks about the KLITSCHKO Foundation and its cooperation with the Maecenata Foundation, Wladimir Klitschko and his brother Vitali, founder of the KLITSCHKO Foundation, clarify:

“Matthias Brückmann, at that time Chairman of the Board of EWE AG, came to me proactively as a guest to a gala for the benefit of the KLITSCHKO Foundation on March 25, 2016 in Kiev and told me the work of our foundation and its projects that had been presented that evening had impressed him very much. At that time, considerably more than 2.5 million dollars had been donated that evening. Mr. Brückmann spontaneously said that he was prepared to round up the amount of donations existing at that time to 3 million dollars and send the foundation what amounted to around 253,000 Euros, taking the conversion into consideration. There were no conditions attached to this donation at any time. Mr. Brückmann made this donation voluntarily and unconditionally. It saddens me that we want to do good with our foundation, yet its seriousness is now being questioned due to mistakes made by others.

Bernd Bönte, CEO of the Klitschko Management Group, also clarifies: “I stood beside Wladimir Klitschko and also clearly heard the generous offer made by Mr. Brückmann.”

The fact that the donation from EWE AG was transferred to the Maecenata Foundation in Germany is a common procedure for foundations located abroad.

Bernd Bönte: “Vitali and Wladimir Klitschko support children and youth with their foundation so they can have a better start in life. More than half a million children and youth have benefited from this in the last 13 years. The fact that there is now an attempt to push a voluntary and unconditional donation into another light at the expense of the reputation of the KLITSCHKO Foundation and the Klitschko brothers is simply embarrassing and shameful.”
