Kyiv Youth Climate Hub

Kyiv Youth Climate Hub is a project for young people in Kyiv aged 15 to 24 who want to make their city greener and cleaner. Participants come up with their own environmental ideas, receive a microgrant and carry those ideas out in their own courtyards, schools and public spaces. The project runs within the global Bloomberg Philanthropies Youth Climate Action Fund.

Context

Kyiv is one of 300 cities around the world taking part in the Bloomberg Philanthropies Youth Climate Action Fund. In each of them young people are making their communities better places to live, and Kyiv courtyards and squares become part of that international work.

Kyiv Youth Climate Hub builds on the Environmental Strategy of the City of Kyiv until 2030: more greenery and shade in courtyards and public spaces, less waste and more things given a second life. Projects run by participants add to what the city is already doing, at the level of one courtyard, one block or one school.

Mission

We believe a city is changed by the people who live in it. The mission of Kyiv Youth Climate Hub is to give young people in Kyiv the resources and the support to improve their city with their own hands: to plant trees, to create shaded and cooler places, to give things a second life and to build habits that stay with people. Changes like these are small in scale, yet hundreds of people see and use them every day.

  • Young people aged 15 to 24

A project has to be proposed, designed and led by at least two young people aged 15 to 24. The team applies together with an applicant organization: a school, a youth or civil society organization, a museum or a municipal institution that is legally registered, non-profit and holds a bank account in its own name.

You do not need to be an environmental expert or to have any experience with grants. An idea, a team and the wish to make your own place better are enough.

Microgrants

One microgrant ranges from UAH 45,000 to UAH 220,000. We will support at least 8 projects.

The money covers what the project needs in order to happen: materials and equipment, events and workshops, permits, transport for participants, promotional materials, and training and mentoring for young people. One rule matters most: at least half of the grant has to go into the activity itself rather than into buying things. The full list of eligible and ineligible costs is in the guidelines.

Focus Areas

Your project has to fit at least one of the two focus areas.

More greenery

New green spaces, a more comfortable urban environment, places of shade and cool, better air quality: greening courtyards and school grounds, community and therapeutic gardens, green areas to rest in.

Less waste

A second life for things, repair, sorting, less waste and lasting habits: sorting stations in schools, repair and swap workshops, campaigns for everyday eco habits, educational workshops where young people teach their peers.

Choose the area that is closer to your idea. You can combine both, though that gives your application no advantage.

Details

The guidelines for participants set out every condition of the competition: focus areas, requirements for applicants, eligible and ineligible costs, the application process step by step and what winners commit to. Read them before you submit your application.
